Our "Craftsman" level  kits come with the parts shown, but the modeler needs to file/grind the point rails from the raw rail provided.  So our "Ready to Assemble" (RTA) level kits additionally include a set of cast metal switch point rails, as shown above, for modelers who do not wish to make their own from the rail provided.  A particular advantge of these cast points is that they are correctly UNDERCUT to allow them to be used PROTOTYPICALLY REALISTICALLY,  WITHOUT FILING THE STOCK RAILS!.   As with all cast items, some fine adjustment (e.g. filing) is often needed to fit them perfectly.

Except for the slightly shorter BLC55, these cast "loose heel" switch point rails as supplied are over scale length (as per standard HO) and can be used as is, or customized by skilled modelers to prototypical length and heel pivots and clearances for Proto:87. 

Either the Craftsman or RTA level of kit can be used to produce switches of virtually the same high standard.

An especially realistic feature, of these switch kits, not found on even the most recently introduced RTR switches, is the more accurate (as per AAR drawings) closer spacing of the ties in the frog region of the switch.

NOTE: These kits do NOT require a separate, expensive JIG TOOL to make them up accurately.  The realistic "Gauge-Lok Groove" plastic tieplates and dummy spike heads also correctly gauge and hold the rails in position for gluing or spiking.  An especially realistic feature, not found on RTR switches is the more accurate (as per AAR drawings) closer spacing of the ties in the frog region of the switch.

EXAMPLES OF PACKS OF VARIOUS TYPES OF TIEPLATES, RAIL JOINERS AND OUR ORIGINAL "SCALE" SPIKES.

Technical innovations in the Ultimate tm Tieplate range include a copyright "central" locating hole and gauge alignment edge in each tie plate to allow the modeler to accurately, visibly align the part exactly to the gauge line on commonly available track templates. This aperture also serves to allow glue or solder to pass through and more strongly join the tieplate to the tie, whether wood, plastic or PC board, and allow the rail to be attached directly then, or later, depending on the modelers chosen method of track building and tracklaying.  E.g. On the Bench, or - In Situ, or as "Herringbone" Single Rail "Half Flex Track".



TIE PLATE SET FOR SWITCHES

Similarly, a set of parts is available to make matching Switches of all sizes, types and eras. As well as the various support plates, the set includes full length, Switch blade strengthening girders, rail braces, Switch rod adjuster ends, guard rail plates and both "split plates" and a number of "half plates" that can be combined with the TP series tie plates to act as a set of either type of progressively sized  "double rail tie plates"

THE FOUR BASIC SPIKE FRETS OFFER THE APPROPRIATE MIX OF SPIKES FOR VARIOUS COMMON NEEDS

FOR THE FIRST TIME USER, THESE FOUR FRETS TOGETHER ARE ALSO AVAILABLE AS A "SAMPLE" PACK FOR JUST $9.95 AND ALLOW THE MODELER TO TRY OUT ALL THE DIFFERENT SIZES, PRIOR TO SETTLING ON  HIS OR HER FINAL CHOICE(S).

While we recommend the use of Ultimate TM tieplates and mostly glued track construction, a few spikes are often needed to hold down "springy" rail firmly in places like tighter curves and stress points on switches. Our wider range of spikes offers sizes suitable for both regular and fine scale HO modeling as well as fine scale work in larger scales such as "S" and "O".  These are precision milled from "half-hard" stainless steel sheet and the shortest versions are generally sharp and stiff enough to penetrate normal soft wood tie materials without pre drilling. As these have much thinner shafts than the traditional softer and coarser plain wire formed spikes, the longer versions particularly should initially be inserted with care and may even need the holes pre-drilled or punched with a fine dental pick, to prevent premature bending.  Similar preparation may be needed to spike into harder materials such as plywood or plastic ties. A few trial insertions will generally determine what preparation, if any, is needed for a particular material.  Regardless of the time spent, the unique, almost exactly prototypical shape of the spike heads, once inserted, will look extremely realistic, whether in conjunction with the Ultimate TM tieplates, or just on their own, and give great satisfaction.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Currently the parts are offered in individual sets, or bundled for even better economy, for the modeler who prefers the pleasure and satisfaction of handlaying his or her own track.  Although typically, use of the Ultimate TM tieplates, will eliminate the need for 95% of the spiking and spikes traditionally used in fine scale track construction, these are offered to provide the proper appearance match for the Ultimate TM tieplates dummy spike heads. In the fairly near future, we will extend our current "Craftsman" range of Switch kits and "DIY flex track" to include special tools and jigs, so that both track and Switches can be constructed, much more quickly, accurately and without special skills.

Finally, but most importantly, we are extremely pleased to point out the new Ultimate TM  range is designed to be as close a match as possible with our existing, also highly realistic, "Ready to Assemble"  and "Craftsman" range of plastic based Ties, Track and Switch kits.  In fact, we believe that it is crucial that a typical modeler should have the freedom to be able to "mix and match" both types of track, virtually invisibly, almost anywhere on a layout.  So we will continue to offer the discerning HO and Proto:87 modeler the full range of choices and options to best suit each individual modeler's past, current and future needs.

The kits require only basic soldering skills, two simple alignment rods (1/8th in. drills or axles work fine) and parallel face clamps to assemble.  If not already in your tool box, these additional items are also available inexpensively from the Stores.

(Please Note that code 40 craftsman type frog kits require one of two slightly different assembly methods) . It is also possible to simply assemble the the frogs with epoxy or ACC (super glue), and use one of our miniature screws to attach a power wire, if needed.

Ultimate TM OPERATING, NEAR SCALE, SWITCH ROD KITS

The new Ultimate MK II Switch Rods come with an optional second dummy throw bar to allow you to exactly simulate the prototype dual rod appearance.  In addition, this second bar performs the new function of keeping the open switch rail pressed firmly against the operating throw bar, thus allowing the bars to be used with any type of switch rails.  - hinged (loose heels) or flexible (continuous) .

These operating rod kits are intended for use with our own switch kits, upgrading good quality RTR switches, or for handlaid switches.  With a little care and adjustment, they can usually even be added to existing laid switches in place.
